What is Peyronie's Disease?

Written by Joel Wong

A person can develop Peyronie’s Disease, or induration penis plastica, when plaque or scar is formed in the penile shaft causing the penis to curve or bend abnormally. The abnormal curvature is more apparent when the penis is erected.

What are the causes of Peyronie's Disease?

Peyronie’s Disease is a wound-healing disorder. This means the penis may have suffered an injury at some point before symptoms occurred.

The exact cause of Peyronie's Disease is not known, but it is believed that it may be the result of acute or chronic injury to the penis or autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease is a condition in which your immune system mistakenly attacks your body.

What are the sign and symptoms of Peyronie's disease?

The sign and symptoms may appear quickly or develop gradually over time.

The sign and symptoms of Peyronie’s disease may include

How Do I Know if I Have Peyronie's Disease?

Your doctor will diagnose you based on your medical history and physical exam. Your doctor may order imaging tests, such as ultrasound to gather more information about the plaque.

What are the Complications of Peyronie's Disease?

In most cases, it is unlikely that Peyronie’s disease will correct itself. Less than 15% of men with Peyronie’s disease report a recovery without medical intervention.

The complication of Peyronie’s disease may include the inability to have sexual intercourse due to the abnormal penile curvature. Peyronie’s disease may lead to Erectile dysfunction. Emotional distress, depression, or anxiety about sexual abilities. Stress in a relationship with your sexual partners.

What are the Treatments Available for Peyronie's Disease?

The treatments for Peyronie’s Disease are classified into non-surgical therapies or surgery.

Non-surgical therapies

There are several less invasive medical options to treat Peyronie’s disease.

The current literature of stem cell treatment for Peyronie’s disease only shows good evidence with the use of oral medication or intralesional therapy (treatment injected directly into the wound).

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) delivers shockwaves into the plaque and breaks it down. It is same as the technology used to break up kidney stones. This treatment is painless. It has no downtime, and it is non-invasive. Each ESWT session lasts for about 15 – 20 mins. The patient commonly needs 6 – 12 treatment sessions.

Surgery

The surgery for Peyronie's Disease is to remove plaque or help straighten the penis during an erection. Surgery may be recommended for men who have Peyronie’s disease when symptoms have not improved, erections or intercourse, or both, are painful, and the curve in the penis prevents sexual intercourse.
